संजय उवाच
सैन्धवे निहते राजन् पुत्रस् तव सुयोधनः ॥
अश्रुक्लिन्नमुखो दीनो निरुत्साहो द्विषज्जये ॥
अमन्यतार्जुनसमो योधो भुवि न विद्यते ॥
न द्रोणो न च राधेयो नाश्वत्थामा कृपो न च ॥
क्रुद्धस्य प्रमुखे स्थातुं पर्याप्ता इति मारिष ॥
निर्जित्य हि रणे पार्थः सर्वान् मम महारथान् ॥
अवधीत् सैन्धवं संख्ये नैनं कश् चिद् अवारयत् ॥
सर्वथा हतम् एवैतत् कौरवाणां महद् बलम् ॥
न ह्य् अस्य विद्यते त्राता साक्षाद् अपि पुरंदरः ॥

saindhave nihate rājan putras tava suyodhanaḥ ||
aśruklinnamukho dīno nirutsāho dviṣajjaye ||
amanyatārjunasamo yodho bhuvi na vidyate ||
na droṇo na ca rādheyo nāśvatthāmā kṛpo na ca ||
kruddhasya pramukhe sthātuṃ paryāptā iti māriṣa ||
nirjitya hi raṇe pārthaḥ sarvān mama mahārathān ||
avadhīt saindhavaṃ saṃkhye nainaṃ kaś cid avārayat ||
sarvathā hatam evaitat kauravāṇāṃ mahad balam ||
na hy asya vidyate trātā sākṣād api puraṃdaraḥ ||
When Saindhava was slain, O king, your son Suyodhana, his face wet with tears, wretched, hopeless of victory over the enemy, thought: neither Drona, nor Radheya, nor Ashvatthaman, nor Kripa is able to stand before the enraged Arjuna, O venerable one. For, having vanquished all my maharathas in battle, Partha slew Saindhava in the clash — no one could restrain him. This great army of the Kauravas is utterly destroyed; for it has no savior, be it Purandara himself.

Duryodhana finally sees the hopelessness of his cause — but the insight comes too late, when his friends have already fallen. It is telling that he recognizes: not one of the greatest warriors can withstand the wrath of Arjuna. The verse teaches that persistence in wrongdoing leads to an hour when retreat is no longer possible; and one who did not heed the warnings comes to know hopelessness not as a lesson toward correction, but as an abyss of despair, for the time to set things right has already passed.
