तं माम् अनार्यपुरुषं मित्रद्रुहम् अधार्मिकम् ॥
किं स वक्ष्यति दुर्धर्षः समेत्य परलोकजित् ॥
जलसंधं महेष्वासं पश्य सात्यकिना हतम् ॥
मदर्थम् उद्यतं शूरं प्राणांस् त्यक्त्वा महारथम् ॥
काम्बोजं निहतं दृष्ट्वा तथालम्बुसम् एव च ॥
अन्यान् बहूंश् च सुहृदो जीवितार्थो ऽद्य को मम ॥
taṃ mām anāryapuruṣaṃ mitradruham adhārmikam ||
kiṃ sa vakṣyati durdharṣaḥ sametya paralokajit ||
jalasaṃdhaṃ maheṣvāsaṃ paśya sātyakinā hatam ||
madartham udyataṃ śūraṃ prāṇāṃs tyaktvā mahāratham ||
kāmbojaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā tathālambusam eva ca ||
anyān bahūṃś ca suhṛdo jīvitārtho 'dya ko mama ||
'What will he say, the unconquerable one who has conquered the other world [Bhishma], when he meets me — ignoble, betrayer of friends, lawless as I am? Look — Jalasandha, the great archer, the hero who rose for my sake, the maharatha who gave up his life, slain by Satyaki. Having seen Kamboja slain, and Alambusa too, and many other friends — what meaning is there now for me in life?'

Duryodhana dreads meeting his grandfather in the other world: conscience fears the judgment of those he betrayed. It is telling that the roll-call of fallen friends strips his life of meaning — yet his thought is still all about himself, his own shame, not about stopping the slaughter. The verse teaches that shame before the dead, however sharp, is not yet correction; and one tormented by how he will face the fallen must first ask whether he himself still perpetuates the very evil that brought them to the grave.
