संजय उवाच
उदीर्यमाणं तद् दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवानां महद् बलम् ॥
अविषह्यं च मन्वानः कर्णं दुर्योधनो ऽब्रवीत् ॥
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो मित्राणां मित्रवत्सल ॥
त्रायस्व समरे कर्ण सर्वान् योधान् महाबल ॥
पाञ्चालैर् मत्स्यकैकेयैः पाण्डवैश् च महारथैः ॥
वृतान् समन्तात् संक्रुद्धैर् निःश्वसद्भिर् इवोरगैः ॥
एते नदन्ति संहृष्टाः पाण्डवा जितकाशिनः ॥
शक्रोपमाश् च बहवः पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजाः ॥

aviṣahyaṃ ca manvānaḥ karṇaṃ duryodhano 'bravīt ||
ayaṃ sa kālaḥ saṃprāpto mitrāṇāṃ mitravatsala ||
trāyasva samare karṇa sarvān yodhān mahābala ||
pāñcālair matsyakaikeyaiḥ pāṇḍavaiś ca mahārathaiḥ ||
vṛtān samantāt saṃkruddhair niḥśvasadbhir ivoragaiḥ ||
ete nadanti saṃhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavā jitakāśinaḥ ||
śakropamāś ca bahavaḥ pāñcālānāṃ rathavrajāḥ ||
Seeing that surging great army of the Pandavas and deeming it unbearable, Duryodhana spoke to Karna: "Here has come that hour to help friends, o lover of friends; save in battle, Karna, all the warriors, mighty one. Surrounded on all sides by the enraged Panchalas, Matsyas, Kekayas, and by the Pandavas, the maharathas, like hissing serpents — there they roar, exultant, the Pandavas, shining with victory, and the many chariot-hosts of the Panchalas, resembling Shakra."

Duryodhana again calls upon Karna as his last support: "here is the hour of friends." It is telling that he calls him "friend-loving" — appealing to devotion, not to gain. The verse teaches that in the fatal hour a leader calls upon the one in whom all his hope rests; and friendship, tested by need, is summoned precisely when other supports have fallen.
