कर्ण उवाच
परित्रातुम् इह प्राप्तो यदि पार्थं पुरंदरः ॥
तम् अप्य् आशु पराजित्य ततो हन्तास्मि पाण्डवम् ॥
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि समाश्वसिहि भारत ॥
हन्तास्मि पाण्डुतनयान् पाञ्चालांश् च समागतान् ॥
जयं ते प्रतिजानामि वासवस्येव पावकिः ॥
प्रियं तव मया कार्यम् इति जीवामि पार्थिव ॥
karṇa uvāca
paritrātum iha prāpto yadi pārthaṃ puraṃdaraḥ ||
tam apy āśu parājitya tato hantāsmi pāṇḍavam ||
satyaṃ te pratijānāmi samāśvasihi bhārata ||
hantāsmi pāṇḍutanayān pāñcālāṃś ca samāgatān ||
jayaṃ te pratijānāmi vāsavasyeva pāvakiḥ ||
priyaṃ tava mayā kāryam iti jīvāmi pārthiva ||
[Karna:] "If Purandara [Indra] himself comes here to save Partha, and having swiftly overcome him too, then I shall slay the Pandava. Truly I promise you, take heart, o Bharata: I shall slay the sons of Pandu and the assembled Panchalas. Victory I promise you, as the son of Fire [Skanda promised victory] to Vasava; what is dear to you shall be accomplished by me — for that very purpose I live, sovereign."

Karna vows to overcome even Indra himself, should he come to save Arjuna: a boldness bordering on boasting. Telling is "iti jivami" — "for that I live": his whole life is laid down in service to Duryodhana. The verse teaches that devotion can be both selfless and blind; and one who lives only to please a friend promises the impossible, for love of a friend clouds his sober sight.
