सर्वेषाम् एव पार्थानां फल्गुनो बलवत्तरः ॥
तस्यामोघां विमोक्ष्यामि शक्तिं शक्रविनिर्मिताम् ॥
तस्मिन् हते महेष्वासे भ्रातरस् तस्य मानद ॥
तव वश्या भविष्यन्ति वनं यास्यन्ति वा पुनः ॥
मयि जीवति कौरव्य विषादं मा कृथाः क्व चित् ॥
अहं जेष्यामि समरे सहितान् सर्वपाण्डवान् ॥
पाञ्चालान् केकयांश् चैव वृष्णींश् चापि समागतान् ॥
बाणौघैः शकलीकृत्य तव दास्यामि मेदिनीम् ॥
sarveṣām eva pārthānāṃ phalguno balavattaraḥ ||
tasyāmoghāṃ vimokṣyāmi śaktiṃ śakravinirmitām ||
tasmin hate maheṣvāse bhrātaras tasya mānada ||
tava vaśyā bhaviṣyanti vanaṃ yāsyanti vā punaḥ ||
mayi jīvati kauravya viṣādaṃ mā kṛthāḥ kva cit ||
ahaṃ jeṣyāmi samare sahitān sarvapāṇḍavān ||
pāñcālān kekayāṃś caiva vṛṣṇīṃś cāpi samāgatān ||
bāṇaughaiḥ śakalīkṛtya tava dāsyāmi medinīm ||
"Of all the Parthas Phalguna is the strongest; at him I shall release the unfailing spear fashioned by Shakra. When that great bowman is slain, his brothers, o giver of honor, will become subject to you or again go into the forest. While I am living, Kauravya, do not despair in the least; I shall conquer in battle the united, all the Pandavas."

Karna stakes everything on Indra's spear, kept in reserve for Arjuna: one hope, one weapon. Telling is "mayi jivati... visadam ma krthah" — while I live, do not despair: he becomes the friend's sole support. The verse teaches that hope hung upon a single weapon and a single life is precarious; and one who bids a friend not to despair "while I live" already senses how fragile that "while" is.
