कृप उवाच
मनोरथप्रलापो मे न ग्राह्यस् तव सूतज ॥
यदा क्षिपसि वै कृष्णौ धर्मराजं च पाण्डवम् ॥
ध्रुवस् तत्र जयः कर्ण यत्र युद्धविशारदौ ॥
देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां मनुष्योरगरक्षसाम् ॥
दंशितानाम् अपि रणे अजेयौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ॥
ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवाग् दान्तो गुरुदैवतपूजकः ॥
नित्यं धर्मरतश् चैव कृतास्त्रश् च विशेषतः ॥
धृतिमांश् च कृतज्ञश् च धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
भ्रातरश् चास्य बलिनः सर्वास्त्रेषु कृतश्रमाः ॥
गुरुवृत्तिरताः प्राज्ञा धर्मनित्या यशस्विनः ॥

manorathapralāpo me na grāhyas tava sūtaja ||
yadā kṣipasi vai kṛṣṇau dharmarājaṃ ca pāṇḍavam ||
dhruvas tatra jayaḥ karṇa yatra yuddhaviśāradau ||
devagandharvayakṣāṇāṃ manuṣyoragarakṣasām ||
daṃśitānām api raṇe ajeyau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ||
brahmaṇyaḥ satyavāg dānto gurudaivatapūjakaḥ ||
nityaṃ dharmarataś caiva kṛtāstraś ca viśeṣataḥ ||
dhṛtimāṃś ca kṛtajñaś ca dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
bhrātaraś cāsya balinaḥ sarvāstreṣu kṛtaśramāḥ ||
guruvṛttiratāḥ prājñā dharmanityā yaśasvinaḥ ||
[Kripa:] "Daydream-babble of yours is unacceptable, son of the charioteer, since you revile the two Krishnas and the Dharma-king, the Pandava. Certain is victory there, Karna, where those two, skilled in battle, unconquerable in war even to the armored among gods, Gandharvas, Yakshas, men, serpents, rakshasas. [Yudhishthira is] devoted to brahmins, truthful in speech, self-controlled, a worshiper of teachers and gods, ever delighting in dharma, and especially skilled in weapons. And his brothers are mighty, practiced in every weapon, devoted to the service of elders, wise, constant in dharma, glorious."

Kripa sets against Karna's boasting the virtues of the Pandavas: truthfulness, self-restraint, reverence for elders, fidelity to dharma. Telling is that he derives victory from righteousness, not from strength: "where those two are, there is victory." The verse teaches that the outcome is decided not by loudness of words but by the rightness of the cause; and where valor and dharma are joined, victory is certain, however loudly the adversary may thunder.
