«Then the Lord, having assumed a Prājāpati-form, Vaishnava, the cause of dissolution — the Goddess named Tripurā, is the primeval power; …the three cities — heaven, earth, and the netherworld — …the Goddess named Hṛllekhā attains a center at the completion of the three peaks, in the abode of dissolution».

The book opens by settling much in advance: the Goddess does not appear on her own, but from the Lord, who has assumed a form. It is said bhagavān… vaiṣṇavaṃ rūpam āśritya, «the Lord, having assumed a Vaishnava form», and only then — «the Goddess named Tripurā». The verb āśritya means «having assumed, having resorted to, having leaned on»: the form is not the Lord Himself, but something He takes upon Himself, and the Goddess emerges from this form, not the other way around.
It is worth saying at once where the reader is heading. This is a śākta, tantric composition, and it is occupied throughout with one task: to read the gāyatrī, the most famous mantra of the Vedas, as a mantra of the Goddess — breaking its words into syllables and substituting a name of power under each syllable. This work is carried out in detail and at length, and one will need to grow accustomed to the device.
Parsing syllables is not forbidden in itself, and Vaishnava commentators do it too. What matters more is visible already here and noticeable to the very end: even this book, reading the gāyatrī as a mantra of the Goddess, begins with Viṣṇu and will end (90) with the famous verse on the «highest step of Viṣṇu». The foundation surfaces on its own, however much is built on top of it.
