The seventh seal is called khecarī, «one who moves through the sky», from kha, «sky, void», and cara, «moving». This name is famous in yoga books, and there it means something else — the position of the tongue curled behind the palate. Here it is given to a position of the hands, and this discrepancy is instructive: one name travels through different compositions and means different things in them. One reading such books must always look at what a name means in this book, not in the one where he met it before.
The word kha itself deserves attention. It means both «sky» and «hole, opening» — the same kha as in the word sukha, «happiness» (literally «with a good opening», from a wheel-hub well fitted onto its axle), and in duḥkha, «grief» («with a bad opening»). These words, however one parses them, speak of one thing: happiness is described in the language itself not as possession, but as easy running. A wheel whose hub is good rolls; one whose hub is bad creaks and wears out. And nothing is needed for this but a proper fit.
