‘Danu had forty sons renowned everywhere, O Bharata; the firstborn among them was king Vipracitti, greatly famed. [These were] Shambara, Namuchi and Puloma, thus renowned, Asiloma and Keshi, and the danava Durjaya; Ayahshira, Ashvashira, mighty Ayahshanku, and also Gaganamurdhan, Vegavan, and the one called Ketuman; Svarbhanu, Ashva, Ashvapati, Vrishaparvan, and also Ajaka, Ashvagriva and Sukshma, and the great asura Tuhunda; Isripa, and Ekachakra, Virupaksha, Hara and Ahara, Nichandra and Nikumbha, Kupatha, and also Kapatha; Sharabha, and Shalabha, and the [demonic] Surya and Chandramas — thus are the danavas listed in the line of Danu; but the gods Surya and Chandramas are two different beings. And in the line [of Danu] ten mighty and powerful bulls among the danavas are renowned, O great king: Ekaksha, Mritapa the hero, Pralamba and Naraka, Vatapi, Shatrutapana, and the great asura Shatha, Gavishtha, and Danayu, and the danava Dirghajihva; their sons and grandsons, O Bharata, are countless. Simhika bore a son, Rahu, the tormentor of the moon and sun, [as well as] Suchandra, Chandrahantri, and Chandravimardana. From Krodha [came] endless offspring of cruel nature, a host named Krodhavasha, cruel in deeds, a crusher of enemies. Anayus, in turn, had four sons, bulls among the asuras: Vikshara, Bala and Vira, and the great asura Vritra. The sons of Kala, resembling [Time] Kala himself, striking, mighty, scorching [their foes] among the danavas, are renowned on earth: Vinashana, and Krodha, and Krodhahantri (Slayer-of-Wrath), and another besides — Krodhashatru; [thus] they are renowned [as] the Kaleyas. The preceptor of the asuras became the son of the sage [Bhrigu] — Shukra; and the four sons of Ushanas (Shukra) are renowned [as] priests of the asuras: Tvashtavara and Atri, and two others, [skilled] in the rites of mantras, radiant like the sun, [able] to reach the world of Brahma. Such is the origin of the lines of the mighty asuras and gods, as I have heard it in the Purana and have related it to you.’
