Here, before the detailed genealogy of all beings, the plan of descent is confirmed once more: the gods are born ‘into the lines of brahmarshis and royal sages’ — that is, into noble, righteous families fit to embody the powers of heaven. It is telling that the demons ‘could not kill’ the god-born ones ‘even in childhood’: dharma made flesh is unconquerable by adharma, however strong the latter may be. Here lies a comfort: where providence is at work, evil is powerless before the chosen instruments of good. Janamejaya’s request to hear the ‘origin of all beings’ introduces the vast genealogy that follows: scripture traces all existence back to a single root — Brahma and Kashyapa — revealing the kinship of gods, demons, men, and creatures alike; all of them are ‘brothers’ by origin, though divided by character. Thus the narrative prepares an understanding: the enmity of dharma and adharma is not a war between strangers, but a rift within a single family of creation.
