Here begins the very heart of the ‘descent of portions’ (amsha-avatarana): the roster of which celestial or demonic spirit incarnated in which hero of the Bharata line. It is telling that the first named are demons (danavas, daityas) who became the rival kings of the Pandavas: Vipracitti as Jarasandha, Hiranyakashipu as Shishupala, Samhrada as Shalya. Here lies a key to the whole epic: behind the enmity of kings stands the age-old strife of gods and demons; the men of the Bharata line are the ‘garments’ of celestial and infernal powers. This does not diminish human freedom and responsibility, but reveals another, higher plane of events: the earthly battle continues the heavenly one. It is also telling that the enemies of the Pandavas are incarnations of demons — Shishupala is Hiranyakashipu, the eternal foe of Vishnu — which is why they stand against Krishna and His friends. Thus the scripture prepares understanding: the coming destruction is no senseless slaughter, but the cleansing of the earth from incarnate adharma.
