ज्ञात्वा तथापनीतां तां वसुभिर् दिव्यदर्शनः ॥
ययौ क्रोधवशं सद्यः शशाप च वसूंस् तदा ॥
यस्मान् मे वसवो जह्रुर् गां वै दोग्ध्रीं सुवालधिम् ॥
तस्मात् सर्वे जनिष्यन्ति मानुषेषु न संशयः ॥
एवं शशाप भगवान् वसूंस् तान् मुनिसत्तमः ॥
वशं कोपस्य संप्राप्त आपवो भरतर्षभ ॥
शप्त्वा च तान् महाभागस् तपस्य् एव मनो दधे ॥
एवं स शप्तवान् राजन् वसून् अष्टौ तपोधनः ॥
महाप्रभावो ब्रह्मर्षिर् देवान् रोषसमन्वितः ॥

evaṃ śaśāpa bhagavān vasūṃs tān munisattamaḥ ||
vaśaṃ kopasya saṃprāpta āpavo bharatarṣabha ||
śaptvā ca tān mahābhāgas tapasy eva mano dadhe ||
evaṃ sa śaptavān rājan vasūn aṣṭau tapodhanaḥ ||
mahāprabhāvo brahmarṣir devān roṣasamanvitaḥ ||
"Having learned that the cow had thus been taken away by the Vasus, the sage of divine sight at once fell under the sway of anger and cursed the Vasus then: 'Because the Vasus stole from me the milk-yielding cow with the beautiful tail — for that all of them shall be born among men, there is no doubt.' Thus the lord cursed those Vasus, the foremost of sages, having fallen under the sway of anger, Apava, O bull among the Bharatas. Having cursed them, the blessed one again fixed his mind on austerity; thus, O king, he cursed the eight Vasus, the one rich in austerity, the mighty brahmarishi, filled with wrath toward the gods."

Here the curse falls: Vasishtha condemns the eight Vasus to be born among men. It is telling that even a great brahmarishi, a treasury of austerity, "fell under the sway of anger": anger is a mighty force, and even one who practices asceticism is not wholly free from it while dwelling in a body. Here is a warning: anger squanders the fruits of long tapas, and so mastery of anger is set above many austerities; the better path is not to answer anger with anger but to forgive, as the great devotees teach. It is also telling that the curse fell upon gods, lords of the world: neither exalted rank nor divinity shields one from the consequences of wronging a saint. In this lies the inviolability of the law — karma acts without regard for persons. Yet notice also the mercy hidden within the anger itself: "they shall be born among men" is both punishment and, by higher providence, a path to purification and to great service (through the birth of Bhishma). Thus scripture shows that even a righteous man's curse, uttered in wrath, is turned by a power beyond him into a blessing for the world.
