ततः मां उपजग्मुः ते समस्ताः वसवः तदा अयाचन्त च मां राजन् वरं सः च मया कृतः जातान् जातान् प्रक्षिप अस्मान् स्वयं गङ्गे त्वं अम्भसिtataḥ māṃ upajagmuḥ te samastāḥ vasavaḥ tadā ayācanta ca māṃ rājan varaṃ saḥ ca mayā kṛtaḥ jātān jātān prakṣipa asmān svayaṃ gaṅge tvaṃ ambhasithen all those Vasus came to me, and they begged of me, O king, a boon; and it was granted by me: 'each of us, as soon as born, you yourself, O Ganga, cast into the waters'
एवं तेषां अहं सम्यक् शप्तानां राजसत्तम मोक्षार्थं मानुषात् लोकात् यथावत् कृतवती अहम्evaṃ teṣāṃ ahaṃ samyak śaptānāṃ rājasattama mokṣārthaṃ mānuṣāt lokāt yathāvat kṛtavatī ahamthus, for those cursed [by the sage], O best of kings, for the sake of their release from the world of men, I did all things as they should be done

Here the tale is completed: the meaning of the drowning of the sons is disclosed — Ganga, by her agreement with the Vasus, was freeing them from the burdens of earthly birth, and only Dyu, the instigator, remained to live long as Bhishma. It is telling that what Shantanu perceived as the killing of his children was in fact mercy — the swift release of gods under a curse. Here is confirmation of a great lesson: judgment by appearance is deceptive; behind seeming cruelty compassion may be hidden, and only by knowing the whole design does one grasp the meaning of what happens. Also telling is the double name given the son — Devavrata (one who has taken a divine vow) and Gangeya (son of Ganga): in the very names his destiny is foretold — a vow and a heavenly origin. Touching too is the image of Shantanu grieving, returning alone to his city: even one who has learned the higher meaning still bears the weight of loss — separation from his beloved and from the son who remains. In this is the truth of earthly life: knowledge of providence does not remove pain, but gives it meaning and support. And the chapter closes by proclaiming the glory of Shantanu and the greatness of the Bharata line, "whose history is called the Mahabharata" — thus the narrative leads on to further deeds and preserves the memory that this tale is itihasa, a beacon of dharma.
