आहुः के चित् परं मोक्षं स च नास्ति कथं चन ॥
अर्थप्राप्तौ च नरकः कृत्स्न एवोपपद्यते ॥
अर्थेप्सुता परं दुःखम् अर्थप्राप्तौ ततो ऽधिकम् ॥
जातस्नेहस्य चार्थेषु विप्रयोगे महत्तरम् ॥

अनुवाद
"Some say that the highest is liberation, but that too does not exist at all; and upon the acquisition of wealth a veritable hell arises. The desire for wealth is great suffering, its acquisition is worse still, and for one attached to possessions, separation from them is greater suffering yet."

Here despair drives the brahmana to deny salvation itself. It is significant how grief clouds the mind: struck down by misfortune, he says that "liberation does not exist at all" — sorrow without refuge loses even faith. Here the danger of despair is seen: it not only torments but blinds, denying the highest good that in fact exists. Yet what is true in his words is also significant: wealth indeed gives no peace — there is torment in craving it, in possessing it, and in losing it. So scripture shows the two-sidedness of grief-born wisdom: the brahmana clearly perceives the futility of wealth, yet in the darkness of grief renounces salvation as well; and his blindness cries out for the light that only turning to God can bring.
