अनुवाद
Your aged father went to heaven long ago, and so did your mother, and your kinsmen are gone as well; what joy was there in staying there? And now, to you who longed to remain with your kin and did not heed my word, has come the loss of your family, causing me great pain.

Here is revealed the futility of an attachment that clung to what had already departed. It is telling that the brahmin's words show that those for whose sake his wife would not leave her homeland had long since passed away -- she held on to memory, to kin who were "gone." Here is a bitter lesson in impermanence: all earthly kinship is fleeting, and to lean on it is to lean on what has already vanished. It is telling that devotion to what no longer exists turned into disaster for those still living. Thus the scripture shows that attachment to the perishable is not only futile but ruinous: clinging to the past, a person destroys the present; only the imperishable deserves to be held onto.
