देवनागरी
अथवा मद्विनाशो ऽयं न हि शक्ष्यामि कं चन ॥
परित्यक्तुम् अहं बन्धुं स्वयं जीवन् नृशंसवत् ॥
सहधर्मचरीं दान्तां नित्यं मातृसमां मम ॥
सखायं विहितां देवैर् नित्यं परमिकां गतिम् ॥

Or rather, this is my own ruin: for I shall not be able, while I myself live, to abandon heartlessly any of my kin -- least of all my companion in dharma, self-controlled, ever like a mother to me, my friend appointed by the gods, my constant and highest support.

Here the brahmin's grief rises to nobility: he would rather perish than be saved at the price of betraying those close to him. His words are telling: to abandon a kinsman "while himself living" would be the act of a "heartless man" -- he will not buy his life with betrayal. Telling too is his reverence for his wife: "companion in dharma," "like a mother," "friend appointed by the gods" -- for him a wife is not a source of pleasure but a sacred companion on the path of duty. Here is an exalted picture of marriage: wedlock is a union in dharma, and the wife is a gift from above and a support of the spirit. Thus the scripture shows that faithfulness to one's own is dearer than life itself; and the brahmin's dignity lies in his readiness to fall rather than betray.
