आत्मानम् अपि चोत्सृज्य तप्स्ये प्रेतवशं गतः ॥
त्यक्ता ह्य् एते मया व्यक्तं नेह शक्ष्यन्ति जीवितुम् ॥
एषां चान्यतमत्यागो नृशंसो गर्हितो बुधैः ॥
आत्मत्यागे कृते चेमे मरिष्यन्ति मया विना ॥
स कृच्छ्राम् अहम् आपन्नो न शक्तस् तर्तुम् आपदम् ॥
अहो धिक् कां गतिं त्व् अद्य गमिष्यामि सबान्धवः ॥
सर्वैः सह मृतं श्रेयो न तु मे जीवितं क्षमम् ॥
ātmānam api cotsṛjya tapsye pretavaśaṃ gataḥ ||
tyaktā hy ete mayā vyaktaṃ neha śakṣyanti jīvitum ||
eṣāṃ cānyatamatyāgo nṛśaṃso garhito budhaiḥ ||
ātmatyāge kṛte ceme mariṣyanti mayā vinā ||
sa kṛcchrām aham āpanno na śaktas tartum āpadam ||
aho dhik kāṃ gatiṃ tv adya gamiṣyāmi sabāndhavaḥ ||
sarvaiḥ saha mṛtaṃ śreyo na tu me jīvitaṃ kṣamam ||
And having given up even myself, I shall suffer, falling under the sway of the pretas; for these, abandoned by me, will clearly not be able to live on here. To forsake any one of them is heartless and condemned by the wise; yet if I sacrifice myself, these will die without me. Thus I have fallen into a desperate strait, unable to overcome this calamity. Alas, woe is me! What path shall I now take, together with my kin? Better to die with all of them than to live -- that does not befit me.

Here grief reaches complete hopelessness -- every way out leads to ruin. Telling is that the brahmin has weighed every path and found each one wanting: whether he gives up a loved one or gives up himself, in every case there is death or disgrace. Here is the limit of human strength: there are troubles that neither courage nor reason can overcome, and then help from above is needed. Telling too is that this very extremity of despair is the hour when deliverance draws near: Kunti and Bhima are already close at hand. Thus the scripture shows that where a person has exhausted himself and sees no way out, the door opens to providence; and out of the very depths of despair, salvation is born through the hand of the righteous.
