ततस् तु भीमो ऽद्भुतवीर्यकर्मा; महाबलो वज्रसमानवीर्यः ॥
उत्पाट्य दोर्भ्यां द्रुमम् एकवीरो; निष्पत्रयाम् आस यथा गजेन्द्रः ॥
तं वृक्षम् आदाय रिपुप्रमाथी; दण्डीव दण्डं पितृराज उग्रम् ॥
तस्थौ समीपे पुरुषर्षभस्य; पार्थस्य पार्थः पृथुदीर्घबाहुः ॥
tatas tu bhīmo 'dbhutavīryakarmā; mahābalo vajrasamānavīryaḥ ||
utpāṭya dorbhyāṃ drumam ekavīro; niṣpatrayām āsa yathā gajendraḥ ||
taṃ vṛkṣam ādāya ripupramāthī; daṇḍīva daṇḍaṃ pitṛrāja ugram ||
tasthau samīpe puruṣarṣabhasya; pārthasya pārthaḥ pṛthudīrghabāhuḥ ||
Then Bhima, wondrous in valor and deeds, mighty, of might equal to the vajra, wrenching out a tree with his arms alone -- a hero without peer -- stripped it of its leaves like a great elephant. Taking that tree, the destroyer of foes, like Yama the staff-bearer wielding his terrible staff, that broad and long-armed Bhima, the other Partha, stood beside the bull among men, the son of Pritha.

Here Bhima's might reveals itself before all eyes. It is telling that he, [hidden] beneath a beggar's rags, tears out a tree as if in play, like Yama raising his staff: hidden strength breaks forth in the hour of need. Here one sees that greatness, kept humble, discloses itself when protection is required; and brother becomes support for brother. So the text shows Bhima's fearsome stature; and the two brothers, with tree and bow, stand as an unyielding wall before the enraged kings.
