श्रुत्वा चोपस्थितान् वीरान् धृतराष्ट्रो ऽपि कौरवः ॥
प्रतिग्रहाय पाण्डूनां प्रेषयाम् आस कौरवान् ॥
विकर्णं च महेष्वासं चित्रसेनं च भारत ॥
द्रोणं च परमेष्वासं गौतमं कृपम् एव च ॥

Here the returning heroes are met with honor. It is telling that the foremost men of the clan are sent to meet them: the worthy are received by the most worthy. An honorable reception is a sign of acknowledged dignity. Thus the text reveals the solemnity of the welcome; and the Pandavas enter the city not as exiles, but as honored heirs.
