देवनागरी
दिव्येषु सर्वकामेषु समानीतेषु तत्र तौ ॥
वरासनेषु संहृष्टौ सह स्त्रीभिर् निषेदतुः ॥
ततो वादित्रनृत्ताभ्याम् उपातिष्ठन्त तौ स्त्रियः ॥
गीतैश् च स्तुतिसंयुक्तैः प्रीत्यर्थम् उपजग्मिरे ॥

"When all things wondrous and fulfilling every desire had been brought there, the two of them, delighted, took their seats upon excellent seats together with their wives; then their wives attended upon them with music and dance, and drew near with songs joined to praises, for their delight."

Here delight in pleasures reaches its limit just before the fall. It is significant that the brothers are surrounded by wives, songs, and praises in the very hour when their end draws near: a feast before destruction. Here it reveals itself that flattery and pleasures lull one to sleep before calamity. Thus the scripture shows carefree revelry; and in the very height of it the instrument of fate will appear.
