Here the tale traces back to the tyrant's father — a king worthy and pious. It is telling that Brihadratha, ‘thin from vows,’ resembling Indra, shows that a good root is no guarantee of good fruit, for his son will become a villain. Thus the scripture shows that the righteousness of fathers is not inherited of itself; and next come the king's own virtues.
