तेन शब्देन संभ्रान्तःtena śabdena saṃbhrāntaḥstartled by that sound,
सहसा अन्तःपुरे जनःsahasā antaḥpure janaḥsuddenly, in the inner chambers, the people
निर्जगाम नर-व्याघ्रnirjagāma nara-vyāghrawent out, O tiger among men,

Here even the flesh-eating rakshasi shows a conscience — she does not take the son from the grieving parents. It is significant that compassion awakens even in a fearsome being: conscience is not wholly extinguished even in a man-eater. The verse shows a spark of goodness even in the wicked; and next, she returns the child.
