तेन शब्देन संभ्रान्तः सहसान्तःपुरे जनः ॥
निर्जगाम नरव्याघ्र राज्ञा सह परंतप ॥
ते चाबले परिग्लाने पयःपूर्णपयोधरे ॥
निराशे पुत्रलाभाय सहसैवाभ्यगच्छताम् ॥
अथ दृष्ट्वा तथाभूते राजानं चेष्टसंततिम् ॥
तं च बालं सुबलिनं चिन्तयाम् आस राक्षसी ॥
नार्हामि विषये राज्ञो वसन्ती पुत्रगृद्धिनः ॥
बालं पुत्रम् उपादातुं मेघलेखेव भास्करम् ॥

nārhāmi viṣaye rājño vasantī putragṛddhinaḥ ||
bālaṃ putram upādātuṃ meghalekheva bhāskaram ||

निर्जगाम नर-व्याघ्रnirjagāma nara-vyāghrawent out, O tiger among men,
राज्ञा सह परंतपrājñā saha paraṃtapatogether with the king, O scourge of foes;
ते च अबले परिग्लानेte ca abale pariglāneand those two weak, exhausted [women],
पयः-पूर्ण-पयोधरेpayaḥ-pūrṇa-payodharetheir breasts full of milk,
निराशे पुत्र-लाभायnirāśe putra-lābhāyadespairing of obtaining a son,
सहसा एव अभ्यगच्छताम्sahasā eva abhyagacchatāmat once came [there] too;
अथ दृष्ट्वा तथा-भूतेatha dṛṣṭvā tathā-bhūteand, seeing in such a state
राजानम् चेष्ट-संततिम्rājānam ceṣṭa-saṃtatimthe king, [full] of expectation,
तम् च बालम् सु-बलिनम्tam ca bālam su-balinamand that most powerful child,
चिन्तयाम् आस राक्षसीcintayām āsa rākṣasīthe rakshasi thought:
न अर्हामि विषये राज्ञःna arhāmi viṣaye rājñaḥ"it is not fitting for me, in the realm of a king
वसन्ती पुत्र-गृद्धिनःvasantī putra-gṛddhinaḥwho dwells, [a king] longing for a son,
बालम् पुत्रम् उपादातुम्bālam putram upādātumto carry off a boy-child,
मेघ-लेखा इव भास्करम्megha-lekhā iva bhāskaramas a streak of cloud [carries off] the sun";

अनुवाद

"Startled by that cry, the people of the inner chambers suddenly came out together with the king, O tiger among men; and those two weak, exhausted wives, their breasts full of milk, despairing of ever obtaining a son, came there too at once. And seeing the king in such a state, full of expectation, and that most powerful child, the rakshasi thought: 'It is not fitting for me, dwelling in the realm of a king longing for a son, to carry off this boy-child, as a streak of cloud [veils] the sun.'"
