अवलेपाद् वधार्हस्य समग्रे राजमण्डले ॥
रुक्मिण्याम् अस्य मूढस्य प्रार्थनासीन् मुमूर्षतः ॥
न च तां प्राप्तवान् मूढः शूद्रो वेदश्रुतिं यथा ॥
imaṃ tv asya na śakṣyāmi kṣantum adya vyatikramam ||
avalepād vadhārhasya samagre rājamaṇḍale ||
rukmiṇyām asya mūḍhasya prārthanāsīn mumūrṣataḥ ||
na ca tāṃ prāptavān mūḍhaḥ śūdro vedaśrutiṃ yathā ||
"But this transgression of his — committed out of arrogance, deserving death, before the whole assembly of kings — I shall not be able to forgive today. This fool, seeking his own death, had designs upon Rukmini; and he did not attain her, the fool, just as a shudra does not attain the hearing of the Veda."

"I shall not be able to forgive" — the measure of forbearance is exhausted. It is telling that even the Lord's mercy has a limit, set by Himself: a hundred offenses may be borne, but the hundred-and-first must not be. The verse teaches that forgiveness is not endless permissiveness: grace is long-suffering so as to give time to come to one's senses, but beyond the limit of correction, judgment follows. And "seeking death" is the exact word for Shishupala: by his own persistence beyond measure he brought his own end upon himself. The Lord was in no hurry to execute judgment — He waited to the last possible delay; and if punishment fell at last, it was only because the one forgiven turned every mercy into a fresh crime.
