निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुराच् चैव युधिष्ठिरसहायवान् ॥
स्नातश् च कृतजप्यश् च ब्राह्मणान् स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥
ततो मेघवरप्रख्यं स्यन्दनं वै सुकल्पितम् ॥
योजयित्वा महाराज दारुकः प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥
उपस्थितं रथं दृष्ट्वा तार्क्ष्यप्रवरकेतनम् ॥
प्रदक्षिणम् उपावृत्य समारुह्य महामनाः ॥
प्रययौ पुण्डरीकाक्षस् ततो द्वारवतीं पुरीम् ॥
तं पद्भ्याम् अनुवव्राज धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
भ्रातृभिः सहितः श्रीमान् वासुदेवं महाबलम् ॥

Having come out from the inner apartments, having bathed, performed his japa, and had the brahmins pronounce the blessing 'svasti,' [Krishna prepared to depart]; and then Daruka, having yoked a chariot well equipped and resembling a great raincloud, presented himself, O great king. Seeing the chariot arrived, bearing the banner of Garuda, the great-souled one circled it clockwise and mounted it [and set off]; and behind the mighty Vasudeva, on foot, followed the glorious Dharmaraja Yudhishthira together with his brothers.

At the hour of departure Krishna performs what is proper -- the bathing, the japa, the blessing of the brahmins: the Lord himself keeps the rite he enjoined upon men. It is significant that Yudhishthira, with all his brothers, follows the chariot on foot: the king, sovereign of a universal realm, escorts his Guest as a servant would -- the highest honor of humble attendance. The verse teaches that the more one truly reveres, the lower one bows: to see the Lord off on foot, leaving the throne behind, is no diminishment but the crown of devotion. And the circling of the chariot clockwise (pradakshina) shows that for them Krishna is not merely a guest but a sacred presence, escorted as one circles an altar.
