सूत उवाच
एवम् उक्तस् तदा राज्ञा व्यासशिष्यः प्रतापवान् ॥
आचचक्षे यथावृत्तं तत् सर्वं सर्ववेदवित् ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
शृणु मे विस्तरेणेमां कथां भरतसत्तम ॥
भूय एव महाराज यदि ते श्रवणे मतिः ॥

अनुवाद
Thus asked by the king, the mighty disciple of Vyasa, knower of all the Vedas, told everything as it had happened: "Listen from me in full detail to this story once again, O best of the Bharatas, O great king, if you have a mind to listen."

The narrator is ready to tell the tale 'once again,' if there is a mind to listen: sacred tradition is not burdened by repetition. It is significant that the story of the fall is set out not in brief but 'in full detail': the memory of a calamity is kept in every particular, so that a lesson may be drawn from it. The verse teaches that attention to a sorrowful history is not idleness but a discipline: whoever wishes to be guarded against ruin studies closely how it entered. And the narrator's readiness to repeat shows the generosity of tradition toward the seeker: truth is not stinted where there is one thirsting to receive it.
