विदुरस्य मतं ज्ञात्वा धृतराष्ट्रो ऽम्बिकासुतः ॥
दुर्योधनम् इदं वाक्यम् उवाच विजने पुनः ॥
अलं द्यूतेन गान्धारे विदुरो न प्रशंसति ॥
न ह्य् असौ सुमहाबुद्धिर् अहितं नो वदिष्यति ॥
हितं हि परमं मन्ये विदुरो यत् प्रभाषते ॥
क्रियतां पुत्र तत् सर्वम् एतन् मन्ये हितं तव ॥
vidurasya mataṃ jñātvā dhṛtarāṣṭro 'mbikāsutaḥ ||
duryodhanam idaṃ vākyam uvāca vijane punaḥ ||
alaṃ dyūtena gāndhāre viduro na praśaṃsati ||
na hy asau sumahābuddhir ahitaṃ no vadiṣyati ||
hitaṃ hi paramaṃ manye viduro yat prabhāṣate ||
kriyatāṃ putra tat sarvam etan manye hitaṃ tava ||
Having learned Vidura's opinion, Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, again spoke this word to Duryodhana in private: "Enough of gambling, O son of Gandhari; Vidura does not approve of it; for he, being of very great wisdom, will not tell us anything unbeneficial. I consider what Vidura says to be the highest good; let all of that be done, son — this I consider to be your good."

Dhritarashtra again — and rightly — says: do what Vidura advises. It is significant that he utters the correct words twice — and twice will fail to hold to them. The verse teaches that repeating the truth is easy, but holding fast to it is hard: with his mouth the king stands for wisdom, with his will he stands for his son. And in this division lies the root of his tragedy: he knows the good, names the good, wishes to appear devoted to the good — but at the decisive moment he will yield. Whoever repeatedly approves of the right but never once follows it does not draw nearer to virtue but only multiplies his own reproach; good words that never become deeds condemn the speaker more than ignorance would.
