आवर्जिता इवाभान्ति निघ्नाश् चैत्रकिकौकुराः ॥
कारस्करा लोहजङ्घा युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥
हिमवत्सागरानूपाः सर्वरत्नाकरास् तथा ॥
अन्त्याः सर्वे पर्युदस्ता युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥
ज्येष्ठो ऽयम् इति मां मत्वा श्रेष्ठश् चेति विशां पते ॥
युधिष्ठिरेण सत्कृत्य युक्तो रत्नपरिग्रहे ॥

kāraskarā lohajaṅghā yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane ||
himavatsāgarānūpāḥ sarvaratnākarās tathā ||
antyāḥ sarve paryudastā yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane ||
jyeṣṭho 'yam iti māṃ matvā śreṣṭhaś ceti viśāṃ pate ||
yudhiṣṭhireṇa satkṛtya yukto ratnaparigrahe ||
"Bowed down, as it were, appear the subject Chaitraki-Kaukuras, the Karaskaras, the Lohajanghas, in the abode of Yudhishthira. The peoples of Himavat, of the seacoast and the shorelands, and all the mines of jewels, and all the border peoples, are gathered in the abode of Yudhishthira. Considering me 'the eldest' and 'the best,' O lord of the people, Yudhishthira, having honored me, appointed me to the receiving of jewels."

Duryodhana himself testifies to the trust and honor Yudhishthira showed him: that he 'considered him the eldest and the best.' It is significant that this brotherly honor did not soften the envious man but only brought him closer to the object of his torment: appointed to receive the gifts, he handled another's wealth with his own hands day after day. The verse teaches that a kindness done to an embittered heart does not heal it but inflames it further: the closer an envious man is let near another's abundance, the more fiercely it burns him. And Yudhishthira's honor, sincere and brotherly as it was, turned — through no fault of the giver — into an instrument of torment for the receiver. Kindness is powerless where there is no wish to be made kind.
