"But, O Sudhanvan, I wish you to grant Virochana his life." Sudhanvan said: "Since, O Prahlada, you chose virtue and did not speak falsehood despite temptation, I grant your son the life so dear to you. Here then is your son Virochana, O Prahlada, restored to you by me. Yet he must wash my feet in the presence of the maiden Keshini." Vidura continued: "For these reasons, O king of kings, it does not befit you to speak falsehood for the sake of land. Having spoken untruth out of love for your son, O king, do not rush toward ruin together with all your children and counselors. The gods do not protect men by taking up staves, as herdsmen do; rather, upon those whom they wish to protect, they bestow wisdom. There is no doubt that a man's aims succeed in proportion to the attention he gives to righteousness and virtue. The Vedas never save a lying man who lives by falsehood from sin. On the contrary, they abandon him as he lies upon his deathbed, just as newly fledged birds abandon their nests.

The fragment 5.35.31-35 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Vidura. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of an embassy, fidelity to promises, and kings' responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
