ववुश् च दारुणा वाता रूक्षा गोराभिशंसिनः ॥
सकबन्धस् तथादित्ये परिघः समदृश्यत ॥
शुष्काशन्यश् च निष्पेतुः सनिर्घाताः सविद्युतः ॥
चचाल चापि पृथिवी सशैलवनकानना ॥
चुक्षुभुश् च महाराज सागरा मकरालयाः ॥
प्रतिस्रोतः प्रवृत्ताश् च तथा गन्तुं समुद्रगाः ॥
vavuś ca dāruṇā vātā rūkṣā gorābhiśaṃsinaḥ ||
sakabandhas tathāditye parighaḥ samadṛśyata ||
śuṣkāśanyaś ca niṣpetuḥ sanirghātāḥ savidyutaḥ ||
cacāla cāpi pṛthivī saśailavanakānanā ||
cukṣubhuś ca mahārāja sāgarā makarālayāḥ ||
pratisrotaḥ pravṛttāś ca tathā gantuṃ samudragāḥ ||
Fierce winds blew, harsh, heralding disaster; and on the sun a dark ring appeared with a headless phantom. Dry lightning struck with thunder and flashing; and the earth trembled with its mountains, groves and forests. And, O great king, the oceans, dwellings of monsters, surged, and the rivers flowing to the sea flowed backward.

Nature answers the wrath of Nara-Narayana with omens of a cosmic upheaval: a headless phantom on the sun, a dark ring, dry lightning, the trembling earth, rivers flowing backward. The ancient science of omens sees in this the speech of the world order, proclaiming an approaching great destruction. It is telling that the very flow of the rivers is reversed — an image of the disrupted course of things. The verse teaches that creation is not indifferent to the deeds of the great: when the fulfillment of a fateful vow draws near, nature itself shudders and speaks in the language of signs, calling the one who heeds to tremble before what is coming to pass.
