रथाश्वनरनागानां प्रवृत्तम् अधरोत्तरम् ॥
क्रव्यादानां प्रमोदार्थं यमराष्ट्रविवृद्धये ॥
वाहनानि शकृन्मूत्रे मुमुचू रुरुदुश् च ह ॥
तान् दृष्ट्वा दारुणान् सर्वान् उत्पातांल् लोमहर्षणान् ॥
सर्वे ते व्यथिताः सैन्यास् त्वदीया भरतर्षभ ॥
श्रुत्वा महाबलस्योग्रां प्रतिज्ञां सव्यसाचिनः ॥
rathāśvanaranāgānāṃ pravṛttam adharottaram ||
kravyādānāṃ pramodārthaṃ yamarāṣṭravivṛddhaye ||
vāhanāni śakṛnmūtre mumucū ruruduś ca ha ||
tān dṛṣṭvā dāruṇān sarvān utpātāṃl lomaharṣaṇān ||
sarve te vyathitāḥ sainyās tvadīyā bharatarṣabha ||
śrutvā mahābalasyogrāṃ pratijñāṃ savyasācinaḥ ||
The chariots, horses, men and elephants began to be overturned — to the delight of the flesh-eaters, for the swelling of Yama's kingdom. The draft animals dropped dung and urine and wept. Having beheld all those dreadful, chilling omens, all your troops were shaken, O bull among the Bharatas, upon hearing the terrible vow of the mighty Savyasachin.

The omens are interpreted directly: "kravyādānāṃ pramodārtham yamarāṣṭravivṛddhaye", "to the delight of the flesh-eaters, for the increase of Yama's kingdom" — all foretells the destruction of multitudes. Even the dumb animals "ruruduḥ", weep, sensing the blood of the coming day. It is telling that dread grips the Kaurava host not from the omens alone but "śrutvā… pratijñāṃ savyasācinaḥ", from the news of Arjuna's vow: the word of the righteous acts like an elemental portent. The verse teaches that the approach of great retribution is felt by all living beings, and a vow sealed by the Lord terrifies the enemy no less than the omens of heaven themselves.
