ताम् आशां विफलां कृत्वा निस्तीर्णौ तौ परंतपौ ॥
द्रोणानीकं महाराज भोजानीकं च दुस्तरम् ॥
अथ दृष्ट्वा व्यतिक्रान्तौ ज्वलिताव् इव पावकौ ॥
निराशाः सिन्धुराजस्य जीवितं नाशशंसिरे ॥
मिथश् च समभाषेताम् अभीतौ भयवर्धनौ ॥
जयद्रथवधे वाचस् तास् ताः कृष्णधनंजयौ ॥
tām āśāṃ viphalāṃ kṛtvā nistīrṇau tau paraṃtapau ||
droṇānīkaṃ mahārāja bhojānīkaṃ ca dustaram ||
atha dṛṣṭvā vyatikrāntau jvalitāv iva pāvakau ||
nirāśāḥ sindhurājasya jīvitaṃ nāśaśaṃsire ||
mithaś ca samabhāṣetām abhītau bhayavardhanau ||
jayadrathavadhe vācas tās tāḥ kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau ||
Having made that hope fruitless, those two scourges of the foe passed through Drona's formation, O great king, and the invincible formation of Bhoja. Then, having seen them having passed through like two blazing fires, having lost hope for the king of Sindhu, they no longer hoped for his life. And Krishna and Dhananjaya, fearless, multiplying fear in their foes, spoke to one another this and that word about the slaying of Jayadratha.

The two, "abhītau bhayavardhanau", themselves fearless, multiply fear in their foes. Their quiet conversation about the slaying of Jayadratha is more terrible than any battle-cry. It is telling that the calm resolve of the two sows terror in thousands. The verse teaches that the fearlessness of those shielded by God is more dreadful than any fury: their quiet certainty of the coming outcome overwhelms the foe more than loud threats; for a calm founded upon the Lord is a sign that the matter is already settled from above.
