देवनागरी
जयद्रथं समीपस्थम् अवेक्षन्तौ जिघांसया ॥
रुरुं निपाने लिप्सन्तौ व्याघ्रवत् ताव् अतिष्ठताम् ॥
यथा हि मुखवर्णो ऽयम् अनयोर् इति मेनिरे ॥
तव योधा महाराज हतम् एव जयद्रथम् ॥

jayadrathaṃ samīpastham avekṣantau jighāṃsayā ||
ruruṃ nipāne lipsantau vyāghravat tāv atiṣṭhatām ||
yathā hi mukhavarṇo 'yam anayor iti menire ||
tava yodhā mahārāja hatam eva jayadratham ||

अनुवाद
Surveying Jayadratha nearby with the desire to kill him, [like two tigers] eager to seize the ruru deer at a watering place — like tigers those two stood. "For such is the look upon the faces of these two" — so your warriors thought, O great king, [taking] Jayadratha as already slain.

The two are "vyāghravat", like tigers over a deer at a watering place: the prey is near. And by their faces the enemies read it: Jayadratha is "hatam eva", already as good as dead. It is significant that the sentence upon the guilty is read from the very countenance of the avengers. The verse teaches that the inevitability of retribution shows itself before the blow falls: the face of one carrying out God's will already proclaims the outcome; and the guilty one, caught in the sight of righteous anger overshadowed by God, is doomed — this is seen before the arrow strikes.
