ऐश्वर्यमदसंमूढो नैष दुःखम् उपेयिवान् ॥
न च ते संयुगे वीर्यं जानाति पुरुषर्षभ ॥
त्वां हि लोकास् त्रयः पार्थ ससुरासुरमानुषाः ॥
नोत्सहन्ते रणे जेतुं किम् उतैकः सुयोधनः ॥

अनुवाद
"Blinded by the intoxication of power, he has not known sorrow and does not know your valor in battle, O bull among men. For the three worlds, Partha, with their gods, asuras, and men, do not dare to conquer you in battle -- how much less Suyodhana alone."

The root of Duryodhana's audacity is "aiśvaryamadasaṃmūḍhaḥ," blindness from the intoxication of power: never having known sorrow, he knows neither his own measure nor another's strength. "Mada," the intoxication of dominion, robs one of discernment. It is telling that the enemy's ignorance of Arjuna's strength is the very fruit of his own pride. The verse teaches that power intoxicates and blinds: one who has not known sorrow knows neither his own limits nor his opponent's might; and "aiśvarya-mada," the wine of dominion, leads to fatal self-assurance -- to go forth against one whom even the three worlds cannot conquer.
