तस्माज् जहि रणे पार्थ धार्तराष्ट्रं कुलाधमम् ॥
यथेन्द्रेण हतः पूर्वं जम्भो देवासुरे मृधे ॥
अस्मिन् हते त्वया सैन्यम् अनाथं भिद्यताम् इदम् ॥
वैरस्यास्यास् त्व् अवभृथो मूलं छिन्धि दुरात्मनाम् ॥
tasmāj jahi raṇe pārtha dhārtarāṣṭraṃ kulādhamam ||
yathendreṇa hataḥ pūrvaṃ jambho devāsure mṛdhe ||
asmin hate tvayā sainyam anāthaṃ bhidyatām idam ||
vairasyāsyās tv avabhṛtho mūlaṃ chindhi durātmanām ||
"Therefore kill in battle, Partha, the son of Dhritarashtra, the shame of his lineage, as of old Jambha was slain by Indra in the deva-asura battle. When he is slain by you, let this leaderless army be shattered; be this the concluding ablution [avabhritha] of this enmity -- cut off the root of the evil-minded."

The image of "vairasya avabhṛthaḥ," "the concluding ablution of enmity," understands the war as a sacrifice (yajna), and the death of the instigator as the avabhritha, the ritual bath that closes the rite. He must be slain as "kulādhamam," the shame of his lineage, "mūlaṃ durātmanām," the root of the evil-minded. It is telling that cutting off the root ends the enmity. The verse teaches that judgment upon unrighteousness is a purifying conclusion, an avabhritha of the long sacrifice of war: to strike the root of evil is to cleanse the world of enmity; and the severing of the source of unrighteousness liberates many, as an ablution completes and purifies a sacrifice.
