काञ्चनाः काञ्चनापीडाः काञ्चनस्रगलंकृताः ॥
काञ्चनानीव शृङ्गाणि काञ्चनस्य महागिरेः ॥
ते ध्वजाः संवृतास् तेषां पताकाभिः समन्ततः ॥
नानावर्णविरागाभिर् विबभुः सर्वतो वृताः ॥
पताकाश् च ततस् तास् तु श्वसनेन समीरिताः ॥
नृत्यमानाः व्यदृश्यन्त रङ्गमध्ये विलासिकाः ॥
इन्द्रायुधसवर्णाभाः पताका भरतर्षभ ॥
दोधूयमाना रथिनां शोभयन्ति महारथान् ॥
kāñcanāḥ kāñcanāpīḍāḥ kāñcanasragalaṃkṛtāḥ ||
kāñcanānīva śṛṅgāṇi kāñcanasya mahāgireḥ ||
te dhvajāḥ saṃvṛtās teṣāṃ patākābhiḥ samantataḥ ||
nānāvarṇavirāgābhir vibabhuḥ sarvato vṛtāḥ ||
patākāś ca tatas tās tu śvasanena samīritāḥ ||
nṛtyamānāḥ vyadṛśyanta raṅgamadhye vilāsikāḥ ||
indrāyudhasavarṇābhāḥ patākā bharatarṣabha ||
dodhūyamānā rathināṃ śobhayanti mahārathān ||
"Golden, with a golden crest, adorned with golden garlands, like golden summits of the great golden mountain [Meru] — those their banners, encircled on every side with brightly multicolored pennants, shone, wreathed all about. And those pennants, stirred by the wind, were seen dancing, like dancing-girls upon a stage. Colored like the rainbow, O bull among the Bharatas, fluttering among the charioteers, the pennants adorn the great warriors."

The pennants dance "raṅgamadhye vilāsikāḥ", like graceful women on a stage — an image that lays bare the vain allure of war, enticing the eye before the hour of death. It is telling that the battlefield is dressed as if for a festival. The verse teaches that earthly beauty, however brightly it shines with gold and rainbow hues, remains a dance upon a stage, fleeting before the face of approaching ruin.
