हस्तिकक्ष्या पुनर् हैमी बभूवाधिरथेर् ध्वजे ॥
आहवे खं महाराज ददृशे पूरयन्न् इव ॥
पताकी काञ्चनस्रग्वी ध्वजः कर्णस्य संयुगे ॥
नृत्यतीव रथोपस्थे श्वसनेन समीरितः ॥

अनुवाद
"A golden elephant's girth-strap was on the banner of Adhiratha's son [Karna]; in battle it seemed, O great king, as if filling the very sky. Bearing pennants, with a golden garland, Karna's banner in the fight seems to dance upon the platform of the chariot, stirred by the wind."

Karna's banner "kham… pūrayan iva" seems to fill the very sky: a splendor fitting one who deemed himself equal to any man. Yet it only "nṛtyati iva", dances in the wind — proud beauty surrendered to the power of a breeze. It is telling that even the most majestic banner is stirred by the same wind as all the others. The verse teaches that outward grandeur, however much it fills the eye, remains the plaything of forces beyond its control, dancing at the will of the wind, not its own.
