आचार्यस्य च पाण्डूनां ब्राह्मणस्य यशस्विनः ॥
गोवृषो गौतमस्यासीत् कृपस्य सुपरिष्कृतः ॥
स तेन भ्राजते राजन् गोवृषेण महारथः ॥
त्रिपुरघ्नरथो यद्वद् गोवृषेण विराजते ॥

govṛṣo gautamasyāsīt kṛpasya supariṣkṛtaḥ ||

tripuraghnaratho yadvad govṛṣeṇa virājate ||

अनुवाद
"And the preceptor of the Pandavas, the renowned brahmin Gautama Kripa, had a beautifully adorned bull. With it that great warrior shines, O king — with the bull, as the chariot of the Destroyer of Tripura [Shiva] shines with a bull."

Kripa's emblem is "govṛṣa", the bull, Shiva's emblem, the support of dharma and austerity: the brahmin-warrior bears the sign of discipline and steadfastness in duty. The comparison to "tripuraghna", the chariot of the Destroyer of the three cities, raises his valor to the feat of vanquishing evil. It is telling that even in the camp of the unrighteous a banner can bear something exalted. The verse teaches that virtue and valor are found on both sides of a battle, and a man's worth is not annulled by his standing on the side doomed by dharma.
