अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय बृहत्क्षत्रो हसन्न् इव ॥
व्यश्वसूतध्वजं चक्रे क्षेमधूर्तिं महारथम् ॥
ततो ऽपरेण भल्लेन पीतेन निशितेन च ॥
जहार नृपतेः कायाच् छिरो ज्वलितकुण्डलम् ॥
तच् छिन्नं सहसा तस्य शिरः कुञ्चितमूर्धजम् ॥
सकिरीटं महीं प्राप्य बभौ ज्योतिर् इवाम्बरात् ॥

व्यश्वसूतध्वजम् चक्रेvyaśvasūtadhvajam cakremade [him] deprived of horses, charioteer, banner; stripped [him] of horses, charioteer, and standard

ततः अपरेण भल्लेनtataḥ apareṇa bhallenathen with another broad-headed [arrow]; then with another bhalla

बभौ ज्योतिः इव अम्बरात्babhau jyotiḥ iva ambarātshone forth, like a luminary from the sky; gleamed, like a star from the heavens

अनुवाद

Then, taking up another bow, Brihatkshatra, as though laughing, stripped Kshemadhurti, the great warrior, of his horses, charioteer, and banner; then with another yellow, sharpened, broad-headed arrow he swept the head, with its blazing earrings, from the king's body. That head of his, suddenly severed, with its curly hair and its diadem, falling to the earth, shone forth like a luminary from the sky.

भाष्य

Again the scale tips: Brihatkshatra, wounded in the heart, "hasan iva", as though smiling, turns defeat into victory and takes the enemy's head. The image "babhau jyotir iva ambarāt" -- the head shining like a star fallen from the sky -- shows beauty within horror: even a severed head remains regal. It is telling that greatness does not desert the fallen. The verse teaches that war brings down even the resplendent, but a man's dignity shines even in his very fall, as a star torn from the firmament does not lose its splendor.
