स वध्यमानः समरे शैनेयस्य शरोत्तमैः ॥
प्राद्रवत् सहसा राजन् पुत्रो दुर्योधनस् तव ॥
आप्लुतश् च ततो यानं चित्रसेनस्य धन्विनः ॥
हाहाभूतं जगच् चासीद् दृष्ट्वा राजानम् आहवे ॥
ग्रस्यमानं सात्यकिना खे सोमम् इव राहुणा ॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ samare śaineyasya śarottamaiḥ ||
prādravat sahasā rājan putro duryodhanas tava ||
āplutaś ca tato yānaṃ citrasenasya dhanvinaḥ ||
hāhābhūtaṃ jagac cāsīd dṛṣṭvā rājānam āhave ||
grasyamānaṃ sātyakinā khe somam iva rāhuṇā ||
He, being struck down in battle by the finest arrows of the son of Shini, suddenly fled, O king — your son Duryodhana. And the world resounded with cries of "alas," seeing the king in battle being swallowed by Satyaki, as the moon in the sky is swallowed by Rahu.

Duryodhana, the instigator of the war and reviler of the Pandavas, himself "prādravat," turns to flight: pride, meeting the force of truth, runs. The image "khe somam iva rāhuṇā," the moon eclipsed by Rahu, paints a passing eclipse — but here it is the unjust who is eclipsed. It is telling that the one now fleeing is the very man who drove all others to war. The verse teaches that the instigator of injustice is first to flee in the hour of reckoning: one who is bold in scheming and proud in prosperity proves fainthearted before the face of retribution.
