प्रेक्षतां सर्वसैन्यानां मध्येन शिनिपुंगवः ॥
अभ्यगाद् वाहिनीं भित्त्वा वृत्रहेवासुरीं चमूम् ॥
समाश्वास्य च हार्दिक्यो गृह्य चान्यन् महद् धनुः ॥
तस्थौ तत्रैव बलवान् वारयन् युधि पाण्डवान् ॥
khaḍgaśaktidhanuḥkīrṇāṃ gajāśvarathasaṃkulām ||
pravartitograrudhirāṃ śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhaiḥ ||
prekṣatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ madhyena śinipuṃgavaḥ ||
abhyagād vāhinīṃ bhittvā vṛtrahevāsurīṃ camūm ||
samāśvāsya ca hārdikyo gṛhya cānyan mahad dhanuḥ ||
tasthau tatraiva balavān vārayan yudhi pāṇḍavān ||
Through the host strewn with swords, spears, and bows, teeming with elephants, horses, and chariots, where fearsome blood flowed by the hundreds of bull-like kshatriyas, in full view of all the armies, the bull of the Shini clan passed through its midst, breaking through the host, like the Slayer of Vritra through the army of the asuras. And, having recovered, the son of Hridika, taking up another great bow, stood his ground there still, mighty, holding back the Pandavas in battle.

Satyaki passes through the host "vṛtraheva āsurīṃ camūm," like Indra through the army of the asuras: the devoted one is likened to the god who scatters the hosts of demons. And Kritavarman, scarcely recovered, again takes up his post. It is telling that even the defeated one returns to duty. The verse teaches that the righteous one's breakthrough against the forces of untruth is a reflection of the divine victory over evil; and that the valor of the steadfast, whichever side he stands on, shows itself in this: having fallen, to rise again and stand one's ground.
