सात्यकिर् उवाच
मुण्डान् एतान् हनिष्यामि दानवान् इव वासवः ॥
प्रतिज्ञां पारयिष्यामि काम्बोजान् एव मा वह ॥
अद्यैषां कदनं कृत्वा क्षिप्रं यास्यामि पाण्डवम् ॥
अद्य द्रक्ष्यन्ति मे वीर्यं कौरवाः ससुयोधनाः ॥
मुण्डानीके हते सूत सर्वसैन्येषु चासकृत् ॥
अद्य कौरवसैन्यस्य दीर्यमाणस्य संयुगे ॥
श्रुत्वा विरावं बहुधा संतप्स्यति सुयोधनः ॥
sātyakir uvāca
muṇḍān etān haniṣyāmi dānavān iva vāsavaḥ ||
pratijñāṃ pārayiṣyāmi kāmbojān eva mā vaha ||
adyaiṣāṃ kadanaṃ kṛtvā kṣipraṃ yāsyāmi pāṇḍavam ||
adya drakṣyanti me vīryaṃ kauravāḥ sasuyodhanāḥ ||
muṇḍānīke hate sūta sarvasainyeṣu cāsakṛt ||
adya kauravasainyasya dīryamāṇasya saṃyuge ||
śrutvā virāvaṃ bahudhā saṃtapsyati suyodhanaḥ ||
"These shaven-headed ones I shall slay, as Vasava [slew] the Danavas; I shall fulfill [my] vow -- carry me [to] the Kambojas indeed. Today the Kauravas with Suyodhana shall see my valor, [when] the shaven-headed host is slain, O charioteer, and in all the armies repeatedly. Today, hearing the manifold outcry of the Kaurava army being torn apart in battle, Suyodhana shall grieve."

Satyaki above all remembers his vow -- "pratijñāṃ pārayiṣyāmi", I shall fulfill the vow: fidelity to his word directs his choice. It is telling that his valor is subordinate to a promise given. The verse teaches that the noble man is bound by his word: it is not whim or ease of path that guides him, but faithfulness to a vow, and the feat is accomplished not for glory but in fulfillment of what he has bound himself to.
