रथनागाश्वकलिलः पदात्यूर्मिसमाकुलः ॥
शैनेयवेलाम् आसाद्य स्थितः सैन्यमहार्णवः ॥
संभ्रान्तनरनागाश्वम् आवर्तत मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
तत् सैन्यम् इषुभिस् तेन वध्यमानं समन्ततः ॥
बभ्राम तत्र तत्रैव गावः शीतार्दिता इव ॥
पदातिनं रथं नागं सादिनं तुरगं तथा ॥
अविद्धं तत्र नाद्राक्षं युयुधानस्य सायकैः ॥
न तादृक् कदनं राजन् कृतवांस् तत्र फल्गुनः ॥
यादृक् क्षयम् अनीकानाम् अकरोत् सात्यकिर् नृप ॥
अत्यर्जुनं शिनेः पौत्रो युध्यते भरतर्षभ ॥

na tādṛk kadanaṃ rājan kṛtavāṃs tatra phalgunaḥ ||
yādṛk kṣayam anīkānām akarot sātyakir nṛpa ||
atyarjunaṃ śineḥ pautro yudhyate bharatarṣabha ||
Thronged with chariots, elephants, horses, swarming with waves of foot soldiers, the great ocean of the army, having reached the shore of the Śineya [Sātyaki], stood still. [With] men, elephants, horses in confusion, it turned round again and again. That army, being slain by his arrows on every side — footman, chariot, elephant, horseman, and likewise horse — unpierced there I did [not] see [any] by Yuyudhāna's arrows. Not such a slaughter, O king, did Phalguna make there, as the destruction of the armies Sātyaki wrought, O king; surpassing Arjuna, the grandson of Śini fights, O bull of the Bharatas.

The ocean-army, "śaineyavelām āsādya sthitaḥ," having reached the shore-of-Satyaki, comes to a stop and whirls in place: the unshaken one holds back the surge of darkness. Sanjaya admits that even Arjuna did not work such slaughter. It is telling that praise of the disciple does not diminish the teacher, but exalts them both. The verse teaches that the firmness of one man is a shore against which the onrush of the many breaks; and the greatness of valor is measured by the fact that a whole army, striking against a single man, loses its momentum and whirls in confusion.
