रथैश् च बहुधा छिन्नैर् ध्वजैश् चैव विशां पते ॥
हयैश् च कनकापीडैः पतितैस् तत्र मेदिनी ॥
शैनेयशरसंकृत्तैः शोणितौघपरिप्लुतैः ॥
अशोभत महाराज किंशुकैर् इव पुष्पितैः ॥
ते वध्यमानाः समरे युयुधानेन तावकाः ॥
त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त पङ्कमग्ना इव द्विपाः ॥
rathaiś ca bahudhā chinnair dhvajaiś caiva viśāṃ pate ||
hayaiś ca kanakāpīḍaiḥ patitais tatra medinī ||
śaineyaśarasaṃkṛttaiḥ śoṇitaughapariplutaiḥ ||
aśobhata mahārāja kiṃśukair iva puṣpitaiḥ ||
te vadhyamānāḥ samare yuyudhānena tāvakāḥ ||
trātāraṃ nādhyagacchanta paṅkamagnā iva dvipāḥ ||
And with chariots shattered in many places, and with banners, O lord of men, and with horses in golden crests, fallen and cut by Shaineya's arrows, drenched in streams of blood, the earth shone there, O great king, like blossoming kimshuka trees. They, your men, struck down in battle by Yuyudhana, found no protector, like elephants sunk in a mire.

The earth "aśobhata... kiṃśukaiḥ iva puṣpitaiḥ," shines, drenched in blood, like blossoming red kimshuka flowers: beauty within horror. And an army without a protector is "paṅkamagnā iva dvipāḥ," like elephants in a bog. It is notable that even the strong are helpless without a protector. The verse teaches that even the mighty perish without a guardian, like an elephant mired in a swamp; and the bloody beauty of the battlefield is no delight but a bitter rebuke of the discord that turns flourishing life into a red morass.
