संजय उवाच
तम् उत्तीर्णं रथानीकात् तमसो भास्करं यथा ॥
दिधारयिषुर् आचार्यः शरवर्षैर् अवाकिरत् ॥
पिबन्न् इव शरौघांस् तान् द्रोणचापवरातिगान् ॥
सो ऽभ्यवर्तत सोदर्यान् मायया मोहयन् बलम् ॥
तं मृधे वेगम् आस्थाय परं परमधन्विनः ॥
चोदितास् तव पुत्रैश् च सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
tam uttīrṇaṃ rathānīkāt tamaso bhāskaraṃ yathā ||
didhārayiṣur ācāryaḥ śaravarṣair avākirat ||
pibann iva śaraughāṃs tān droṇacāpavarātigān ||
so 'bhyavartata sodaryān māyayā mohayan balam ||
taṃ mṛdhe vegam āsthāya paraṃ paramadhanvinaḥ ||
coditās tava putraiś ca sarvataḥ paryavārayan ||
Him breaking free of the chariot ranks, like the sun bursting from darkness, the teacher, wishing to hold him back, showered with torrents of arrows. As though drinking in those streams of arrows that flew from Drona's excellent bow, he pressed on toward his own brothers, bewildering the army with a kind of enchantment. Bhima, "piban iva śaraughān," as if drinking in the streams of arrows: for the terrible one advancing against the foe, the enemy's onslaught is like water to the thirsty. It is telling that he breaks out of the ranks "tamaso bhāskaram yathā," like the sun from darkness. The verse teaches that valor shielded by truth breaks through the gloom of untruth as the sun breaks through cloud: a downpour of arrows cannot hold it back, but only sets off its brilliance.
