तस्य भीमो भृशं क्रुद्धस् त्रीञ् शरान् नतपर्वणः ॥
निचखानोरसि तदा सूतपुत्रस्य वेगितः ॥
तैः कर्णो ऽभ्राजत शरैर् उरोमध्यगतैस् तदा ॥
महीधर इवोदग्रस् त्रिशृङ्गो भरतर्षभ ॥
सुस्राव चास्य रुधिरं विद्धस्य परमेषुभिः ॥
धातुप्रस्यन्दिनः शैलाद् यथा गैरिकराजयः ॥
किं चिद् विचलितः कर्णः सुप्रहाराभिपीडितः ॥
ससायकं धनुः कृत्वा भीमं विव्याध मारिष ॥
चिक्षेप च पुनर् बाणाञ् शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
tasya bhīmo bhṛśaṃ kruddhas trīñ śarān nataparvaṇaḥ ||
nicakhānorasi tadā sūtaputrasya vegitaḥ ||
taiḥ karṇo 'bhrājata śarair uromadhyagatais tadā ||
mahīdhara ivodagras triśṛṅgo bharatarṣabha ||
susrāva cāsya rudhiraṃ viddhasya parameṣubhiḥ ||
dhātuprasyandinaḥ śailād yathā gairikarājayaḥ ||
kiṃ cid vicalitaḥ karṇaḥ suprahārābhipīḍitaḥ ||
sasāyakaṃ dhanuḥ kṛtvā bhīmaṃ vivyādha māriṣa ||
cikṣepa ca punar bāṇāñ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
At him Bhima, fiercely enraged and swift, drove three smooth-jointed arrows into the chest of the son of the suta. With those arrows lodged in the midst of his chest, Karna then shone like a lofty three-peaked mountain, O bull among the Bharatas. And his blood flowed, pierced by those excellent arrows, like streaks of red ochre from a mountain oozing ore.

The arrows in Karna's chest turn into beauty: he shines 'triśṛṅgo mahīdharaḥ iva', like a three-peaked mountain, his blood flowing 'gairikarājayaḥ', like ochre veins upon rock. It is telling that the hero's wounds are an ornament of his valor. The verse teaches that trial does not disfigure the steadfast but crowns him: wounded, he resembles a majestic mountain streaked in crimson, for a spirit unshaken by the blow turns the wound itself into a mark of greatness.
