स छाद्यमानः सहसा कर्णेन दृढधन्विना ॥
धनुर्ज्याम् अच्छिनत् तूर्णम् उत्स्मयन् पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन प्राहिणोद् यमसादनम् ॥
वाहांश् च चतुरः संख्ये व्यसूंश् चक्रे महारथः ॥
हताश्वात् तु रथात् कर्णः समाप्लुत्य विशां पते ॥
स्यन्दनं वृषसेनस्य समारोहन् महारथः ॥
sa chādyamānaḥ sahasā karṇena dṛḍhadhanvinā ||
dhanurjyām acchinat tūrṇam utsmayan pāṇḍunandanaḥ ||
sārathiṃ cāsya bhallena prāhiṇod yamasādanam ||
vāhāṃś ca caturaḥ saṃkhye vyasūṃś cakre mahārathaḥ ||
hatāśvāt tu rathāt karṇaḥ samāplutya viśāṃ pate ||
syandanaṃ vṛṣasenasya samārohan mahārathaḥ ||
He, suddenly enveloped by Karna, the steadfast bowman, quickly cut the bowstring, smiling, the delight of Pandu; and he sent Karna's charioteer to the abode of Yama with a broad-headed arrow, and made the four horses in the battle lifeless, the great warrior. From the chariot whose horses were slain, Karna, leaping down, O lord of peoples, mounted the chariot of Vrishasena, the great warrior.

Bhima, 'utsmayan', smiling, cuts the bowstring and strips Karna of his chariot: calm superiority. It is telling that he does not slay the now-helpless Karna. The verse teaches that the noble keeps measure even in anger: having overcome the enemy, he strips him of the means to fight but does not strike down the unarmed — for valor keeps its honor even in triumph, and victory without treachery is nobler than victory at any cost.
