Бхуришравас
इदं तु नीचाचरितम् असत्पुरुषसेवितम् ॥
कथम् आचरितं पार्थ त्वया कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥
आर्येण सुकरं ह्य् आहुर् आर्यकर्म धनंजय ॥
अनार्यकर्म त्व् आर्येण सुदुष्करतरं भुवि ॥
येषु येषु नरः पार्थ यत्र यत्र च वर्तते ॥
आशु तच्छीलताम् एति तद् इदं त्वयि दृश्यते ॥
idaṃ tu nīcācaritam asatpuruṣasevitam ||
katham ācaritaṃ pārtha tvayā karma suduṣkaram ||
āryeṇa sukaraṃ hy āhur āryakarma dhanaṃjaya ||
anāryakarma tv āryeṇa suduṣkarataraṃ bhuvi ||
yeṣu yeṣu naraḥ pārtha yatra yatra ca vartate ||
āśu tacchīlatām eti tad idaṃ tvayi dṛśyate ||
"This is indeed a base deed, done by evil men -- how was it done by you, O Partha, as though it were the most difficult of deeds? For the noble, they say, a noble deed is easy, Dhananjaya; but an ignoble deed is hardest of all on earth for the noble to do. Among whomever a man dwells, and wherever he lives, he quickly takes on that nature -- and this is seen in you."

Bhurishravas lets fall a bitter truth: an evil deed is hardest of all for the noble to perform -- and so its very commission betrays a corruption from bad company. It is significant to note "āśu tacchīlatām eti" -- a man swiftly takes on the nature of those around him. The verse teaches that surroundings quietly shape the soul: closeness to unworthy counsel inclines even the worthy toward an unworthy deed; one must guard not only one's actions but one's company, for character is caught like a contagion.
