देवनागरी
कथं हि राजवंश्यस् त्वं कौरवेयो विशेषतः ॥
क्षत्रधर्माद् अपक्रान्तः सुवृत्तश् चरितव्रतः ॥
इदं तु यद् अतिक्षुद्रं वार्ष्णेयार्थे कृतं त्वया ॥
वासुदेवमतं नूनं नैतत् त्वय्य् उपपद्यते ॥

vāsudevamataṃ nūnaṃ naitat tvayy upapadyate ||

इदम् तु यत् अतिक्षुद्रम्idam tu yat atikṣudramthis, though, which is most base; yet this, so base a thing
वार्ष्णेयार्थे कृतम् त्वयाvārṣṇeyārthe kṛtam tvayāfor the sake of the Varshneya, done by you; done by you for the sake of the Varshneya [Satyaki]
वासुदेवमतम् नूनम्vāsudevamatam nūnamthe opinion of Vasudeva, surely; this, surely, is the counsel of Vasudeva
न एतत् त्वयि उपपद्यतेna etat tvayi upapadyatenot this in you is fitting; this does not befit you
अनुवाद
"How then, being of royal lineage, and especially a Kauravya, good of conduct, faithful to your vows, have you departed from kshatriya dharma? And this most base thing you have done for the sake of the Varshneya [Satyaki] -- surely this is the counsel of Vasudeva; it does not befit you."

Bhurishravas cannot believe that baseness comes from Arjuna himself, and ascribes it to Krishna's counsel: a high opinion of a man seeks an outside cause for his fall. It is significant that the reproach is interwoven with praise -- "good of conduct, faithful to your vows": the one who reproaches still honors the one reproached. The verse teaches that even in rebuke, the noble does not strip the fallen of his dignity; yet a bitter hint remains here too -- even righteous counsel, if it leads to a breach of honor, leaves its stain on the one who carries it out.
