धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
सिन्धुराजे हते तात समरे सव्यसाचिना ॥
तथैव भूरिश्रवसि किम् आसीद् वो मनस् तदा ॥
दुर्योधनेन च द्रोणस् तथोक्तः कुरुसंसदि ॥
किम् उक्तवान् परं तस्मात् तन् ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥
संजय उवाच
निष्टानको महान् आसीत् सैन्यानां तव भारत ॥
सैन्धवं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भूरिश्रवसम् एव च ॥
मन्त्रितं तव पुत्रस्य ते सर्वम् अवमेनिरे ॥
येन मन्त्रेण निहताः शतशः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥

sindhurāje hate tāta samare savyasācinā ||
tathaiva bhūriśravasi kim āsīd vo manas tadā ||
duryodhanena ca droṇas tathoktaḥ kurusaṃsadi ||
kim uktavān paraṃ tasmāt tan mamācakṣva saṃjaya ||
saṃjaya uvāca
niṣṭānako mahān āsīt sainyānāṃ tava bhārata ||
saindhavaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhūriśravasam eva ca ||
mantritaṃ tava putrasya te sarvam avamenire ||
yena mantreṇa nihatāḥ śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ||
[Dhritarashtra:] "When the Sindhu king was slain in battle by Savyasachin, dear one, and likewise Bhurishravas — what was your mood then? And what did Drona say, after being so rebuked by Duryodhana in the assembly of the Kurus? Tell me of that, Sanjaya." [Sanjaya:] A great groan arose among your troops, O Bharata, on seeing Saindhava and Bhurishravas slain; they utterly despised the plan of your son — the plan by which bull-like kshatriyas were slain by the hundreds.

The army groans and condemns the very plan of its leader: when a scheme ends in heaps of corpses, trust in the leader collapses. It is telling that they blame not the enemy but "the plan of your son" — an unjust undertaking loses respect even among its own. The verse teaches that a plan purchased with hundreds of wasted lives condemns itself; and a leader whose strategy leads only to ruin loses not merely the battle, but the hearts of those he led.
