ततस् तस्मिन् परित्राणम् अलब्धवति फल्गुनात् ॥
न किं चिद् अनुपश्यामि जीवितत्राणम् आत्मनः ॥
मज्जन्तम् इव चात्मानं धृष्टद्युम्नस्य किल्बिषे ॥
पश्याम्य् अहत्वा पाञ्चालान् सह तेन शिखण्डिना ॥
तन् मा किम् अभितप्यन्तं वाक्शरैर् अभिकृन्तसि ॥
अशक्तः सिन्धुराजस्य भूत्वा त्राणाय भारत ॥
tatas tasmin paritrāṇam alabdhavati phalgunāt ||
na kiṃ cid anupaśyāmi jīvitatrāṇam ātmanaḥ ||
majjantam iva cātmānaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya kilbiṣe ||
paśyāmy ahatvā pāñcālān saha tena śikhaṇḍinā ||
tan mā kim abhitapyantaṃ vākśarair abhikṛntasi ||
aśaktaḥ sindhurājasya bhūtvā trāṇāya bhārata ||
"Then, when that [Jayadratha] did not obtain rescue from Phalguna, I see nothing that would save my life. I see myself as if drowning in the [reckoning] prepared by Dhrishtadyumna, [if] I do not slay the Panchalas together with that Shikhandin. Why then do you cut me, grieving, with word-arrows, having yourself failed to save the Sindhu king, O Bharata?"

Drona foresees his own fate as well — death at the hands of Dhrishtadyumna: the teacher glimpses his own end. It is telling that he meekly turns the reproach back: "you yourself did not save Jayadratha — why then blame me?" The verse teaches that one who condemns another should first look at his own powerlessness; and one who foresees his own death yet does not falter shows a courage beyond all — for he goes into battle knowing the outcome.
